Attack on Titan [Rivaille x Reader] : Chapter 4

Those days...

You panted heavily as you went through the forest to meet up with your friend.  The river in the forest was the first place you saw her.  Ever since, you two made an agreement to come play everyday by that river in the forest.  You had no problem with it since your house was next to the forest and the river was near enough for you to hear Erwin calling you to get back home.  Soon, you heard the sound of water as you near.  Swatting away leaves from your face, you saw her with her feet dipped in the water.  She jerked her head to face you and gave you a faint smile.  You smiled back and sat down next to her, letting your feet touch the water.

"So, how are you today?"  you asked your friend.

"I've been good.  How about you, [Name]?"  she replied.

"I'm fine."  you smiled at her which then she returned.

Moments have passed and not one of you talked.  You're okay with it, though.  It was always like this.  You go in the forest, meet up with your friend, spend time together with or without some talking, and just spend the rest of your time with your feet dipped in the water as you waiting for Erwin to call you home for dinner.  You were pretty content about the whole thing.  Sometimes, peace and quiet is all that you needed in life.  You lied down on your back and watched the blue sky.

"Hey [Name]..."  your friend spoke.

"Yeah?"  you replied, your eyes still on the sky.

"Did you know that you actually die two times?"  you sat up, confused about what she said.

"Huh?"

"The first death is literal death.  The second death is when everyone forgets about you."

"Well,"  you looked down at your feet.  "I'll make sure that nobody forgets about me."

"Good for you."  she replied teasingly.

"Hey~"  you laughed.  "I'm serious.  I think I'll even join the military and become a great soldier so that no one will ever forget me."

"I was thinking of joining the military as well.  I think I will when I'm older."

"Then, we can join together!  And don't worry about stuff, okay?  I'll make sure that I'll never forget about you."

"Thank you, [Name]..."  she closed her eyes and lied down on her back.  You just smiled and lied down on your back as well.

You really hoped that your conversation would last a little bit longer.  It's not everyday when you and your friend had a conversation this long.  But, it's too late to talk about something else and besides, you couldn't think of anything else more.  You couldn't tell how many hours or minutes has passed but it must of been late since the blue sky was darker.  All you could do now was wait for Erwin to call you.

'I wonder what he's up to now...' you thought to yourself

Erwin...  You depended on him ever since that day.  He took you in his home.  He was like a father to you or maybe a mother too.  He was the one who cooked, did the chores, took care of the house.  Hey, don't feel too bad for yourself, you helped him too.  You have found out that it was just the two of you.  You didn't know if Erwin had a mother or father.  They could be dead right now or just gone away somewhere else.  But still...

"Commando dork!  It's time for dinner!"  you heard Erwin's voice.  You stood up.

"Coming, dunderhead!"  you called back.

You gave your friend a look.  You waved at her and she waved at you back.  It was time to depart for the day.  It was short but at least you learned something new.

"Bye!  See you tomorrow...

Annie..."

...

"[Name]."  a familiar voice said.

You looked around you to see that you were in a dimly lit room.  In the center was you, lying down on the floor.  You couldn't see much since it was dark.  Then, you heard that voice call out again.

"[Name]..."  your eyes widened.

"A-annie?"  you called out quietly, trying to look for the girl whom you called your childhood best friend.  You saw no one.

"Are you really going to sell me out?"  you shivered when you heard her voice call out to you in a quiet whisper.

"Can you really forgive yourself if you let me get captured?"  she continued.

"Let's see what you can do...

[Name]..."

Day 3...

You feel your forehead sweating.  It was cold.  You shivered.  It was then you remembered.  Annie...  Your childhood friend.  Could it be that she was the one who killed the titans?  If so then why would she?  Brushing those confusing questions aside, you shifted.  You felt your body ache and you groaned out in pain.  You felt disoriented from last night.  Annie hit your pressure points hard.  You opened your eyes as you rubbed then.  You looked around the room where you were in; an Infirmary.  From the windows you can see that it was morning because patches of bright yellow light could be seen outside.  You took a deep breath and sat up. You were currently alone at the moment.

"Oh, what am I to do...?"  you said to yourself in despair

Then, you noticed a faint smell of [favorite flower] in the room.  Following the scent, you looked at the flower vase sitting on the desk next to the Infirmary bed you were lying on.  It had a note attached to one of the delicate flowers.  You gently reached for it to read it.

To [First Name] [Last Name],

Get well soon!  We'll be waiting for you in the Cafeteria when you wake up!

From:  Everyone

You felt yourself smile at the note you've read.  you yawned and stretched one more time before standing up from the bed.  You looked at your attire to see the annoying straps you hated so much have been removed from your body.  All you were wearing now was the shirt from last night and military pants.  It looks like you weren't wearing the boots.  You felt the cold floor get in touch of your feet.

"It's awfully cold today despite of the beautiful and sunny weather outside."  you sighed.  With that, you fixed the bed sheets and walked outside the Infirmary bare-footed.

Once you've stepped out of the Infirmary, you could hear footsteps going near you.  'Hey... Is that you, [Name]?'  you heard Eren's voice.  You sweat-dropped.  You casually began walking the other way to tease them.  You must show them that your bubbly self was back to normal.

"[Name]!  Hey, where'ya going?"  you heard Eren call out.  You turned around with a mischievous smile on your face.

"Oh, sorry.  I don't quite remember you."  you joked.  Eren smiled a little, noticing that you're joking with him.   He went towards you and put an arm over your shoulder.

"Well, let's get going!  Everyone's waiting for you!"  he smiled at you.  It was so kind and caring.  You found yourself smiling back at him sweetly.

"Alright.  Let's go, Eren."

...

"Tsk."  Levi made a sound of distaste as he saw yours and Eren's retreating figure walk away at the opposite hallway.  Seeing no other excuse to stop the two of you, he walked at the opposite hall defeated and acted like he didn't see the two of you.

"I wouldn't think that brat remembered me too..."  he said to himself quietly.

"Didn't you say we were going to the Cafeteria?  This is yours and Jean's room, right?"

[A.N:  Don't get any ideas, reader~ *wink* *wink*]

"Yeah,"  Eren rubbed the back of his head and smiled at you.  "Everyone's here if you're asking.  We thought you would wake up during Lunch but since that's over, we thought of just meeting up in a room."

"Alright then."  you smiled back and nodded.

You reached out for the doorknob and opened the door revealing your friends from the 104th Trainees Squad.  Everyone who survived was there waiting for you.  You couldn't believe it.  They were the nicest people you've ever met since the first day you've stepped into the Headquarters.  And now, they were actually here for you to make sure you're okay from last night.

"Hey, everyone."  you smiled and waved.  You glomped the first person you saw and that was Christa.

"Nice to see you've come to, [Name]."  Christa laughed.

You decided to spend the next 2 hours with them talking about the recent events including last night.  When asked a question about who you thought killed the titans, you denied the fact it was Annie and simply shrugged it off with an 'I don't know'.  It was a good time hanging out with them.  It was a shame to leave so soon as well.  But, you know your duties and responsibilities.  You have to go to Erwin's office since he'll most likely ask you several questions about the accident.  You'll also try to avoid Hanji most of the time since she'll probably cry and ask you more questions about her precious titans.  As much as you loved Hanji you haven't fully recovered yet and more questions would make your head hurt.

"Well, I better get going and tell Commander Erwin that I'm awake.  I'll see you in a while guys."  you said, walking to the door.

"Sure, bye [Name]."  they said to you.

You said your farewells and left Eren and Jean's bunk.  You took a deep breath before making your way to Erwin's office.  On the way, you saw some fellow soldiers who greeted you.  You also saw Petra and she told you that Hanji wanted to see you and said that she was waiting in the Cafeteria.  You sighed, 'Great... That's just what I wanted to hear...  After your little chat with Petra, you decided to talk to Hanji first before Erwin.  After all, it the Cafeteria was nearer than his office right now and you were a bit lazy.  Not long, you stood outside the Cafeteria doors, ready to open it.

"Well, here goes nothing..."  you said to yourself as you opened the door.

There was nobody there except for Hanji.  Well, whatever's left of her that is.  You could hear her from the table near the wall, crying and sulking.  She must of have been really upset because you've never seen her cry like that before.  It was so sincere that the tears falling from her face could cry too if they wanted to.  You approached your and sat next to her.  Her face was planted on the desk and what seemed to be a small pool of tears was surrounding her head.  Unsure what to do next, you patted her back gently.

"It's okay, Zoe.  You can tell me anything."  you said to her awkwardly.  She stopped crying for a while and sniffed, trying to hold back incoming tears.

"Oh, [Name], this is so awful!"  she said to you, her voice breaking at every syllable.  You patted her more at the back and told her comforting words to ease her.

"I'm sorry, Zoe.  If I had arrived earlier, this wouldn't happen.  It feels like I failed you..."  you said quietly.  She stopped crying and lifted her head to look at you in disbelief.

"Hey, don't say that.  No one could of had known it was going to happen so don't blame yourself, [Name]."

"But still, I feel so useless.  I could of had stopped it.  I could of had taken that person down.  I'm so sorry, Zoe."

"Hey,"  it looks like she was a little bit better.  "didn't I tell you not to blame yourself?  You have every right to be innocent, [Name].  You didn't know it was going to happen, it wasn't you're fault and nobody's blaming you.  Besides, I think Sawney and Bean are doing much better now without being pinned down with wires."  you giggled.

"Well, I think my job here is done.  I was going to comfort you and all, but I think you did a pretty good job without me, Zoe."  you winked playfully.  She looked at you dumbfounded for a while before patting your hair and laughing.

"You're a very clever girl, [Name].  I wouldn't be surprised you that you haven't change a bit."  you simply smiled and nodded.

After your little talk with Hanji, you made your way to your brother's office.  It's been an eventful day so far.  You got a little bit worried of what would happen next but hey, it's not like you can see the future or something.  After a few minutes of walking you finally made it in front of your brother's office.  You took a deep breath and knocked on the door gently but loud enough to be heard.

"Come in."  you heard your brother say through the door.  You went in.

"Good afternoon, Erwin."  you smiled at him.  He smiled back and motioned you to sit down which you did.  He seemed to be doing paperwork but he stopped so he can talk to you.

"So, do you go first or do I?"  you asked.  He took a deep breath.

"Alright.  What happened last night, [Name]?  Tell me the whole  thing and I'll interrogate you after you've finished."  you nodded.

"I went outside the Cafeteria as soon as Eren asked Hanji to tell him all about the titans.  I wanted some fresh air, that's all.  Before I knew it, I saw smoke coming from the place we kept those titans.  When I arrived, it was dimly lit and I was far too late.  I wasn't wearing my 3DMG so I was completely defenseless when a figure knocked me out.  It's hard to say who did it, though.  It was pretty dark."  you finished.

"Alright.  Here we go then.  What do you think was the reason why this person killed the titan subjects?"

"I don't know but I'll definitely find out."  he nodded.

"Where did this person hit you to cause you to fall unconscious?"

"Pressure points, I presume.  I'm sure you know where those are, Erwin."

"If it was you to decide, who would you think it would be?"  you gulped slowly and silently.  Should you tell the truth?  Even if he was your brother, your secrets are never really safe when he's the one to keep it.  He hasn't met Annie at the past so why would he show her mercy?  You did a thinking pose with a goofy looking face to avoid suspicion.

"Hm, I don't know.  It was dark and all so..."  you said playfully, hoping this will help you.  Erwin simply nodded and went back to his paperwork.

At that moment, you were sure that Erwin knew your plan.  You were used to this already since the day you lived with him in those woods.  He was clever, cunning and smart.  Desperate not to cause and suspicion, you decided to keep up the act and started thinking of stupid stuff to tell him.  After all, your mind was at the same shade of color as him and you won't be defeated.  You smirked playfully.

"Man, I'm kinda hungry.  I haven't eaten lunch and all.  What did you guys have anyway?"

"Hm?"  he looked at you with confusion written on his face.  Then he smiled.  "Levi made lunch a while ago.  I can't say I knew what he made though, it was probably one of his country's cuisine.  It tasted good and it looked fancy."

"Eh?!  He's the one who made food??!!  Wow, I'm so jealous that I didn't get a taste of that.  I didn't even know that guy could cook.  Humph, he's such a hot head.  No one would ever date a guy like that."  he chuckled.

Silence...

"[Name], what do you think love is?"  Erwin asked out of the blue.  You stared at him in disbelief and confusion but then hung your head and sighed.

"It's merely a nuisance.  We're all going to die anyway so why fall in love and get your hopes crushed when they die or when you die?"

"Ah, so you're talking about that kind of love, huh?  I knew you would.  Love comes in different forms, [Name]."  you sighed.

"Not this again..."  he chuckled.

"Then can you ever love again, [Name]?"

Silence...

"I don't think I could after that day.  It happened so fast and... It seems I've even forgotten who my Squad Members were..."

"Did you ever think that they could of had survived it?"

"Of course not.  I saw them get eaten one by one."

"The what if I tell you that one of them did survive that day?"  you glanced at him but sighed and looked at the wall.

"I wouldn't believe you, of course."

"But you should because someone did survive."

"And who would that be?"  you said, still not believing him.

But the next words he said completely took you aback.  It was impossible!  You were so sure that he had led you live on when it was his darkest hour.  You were so sure that he was dead right now.  How could this be?  You couldn't understand.  You just shook on the chair you ere sitting on with your head bowed down.  Not long after, you felt tears prick and fall down your cheeks.  At the same time, you remembered that memory of yours that made you left in the first place.  Your heart began to ache in sadness.  'Not this again...'  You were clearly not expecting this.  Like you said, you've just gotten over it five weeks ago.  Hearing it again...  'Damn it.'  you felt completely weak and powerless against your brother.  His words and actions would simply twist your efforts in the end and then you'll be seeing it his way.  That's how it normally was.

"I-impossible..."  you said quietly, your voice breaking.
